“Times are hard for dreamers”

Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic favourites handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights. This month, Cheryl takes us back in time to 2001 and across the Channel to Montmartre for Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie. The story of a shy waitress whose schemes to help others might lead to her own happiness, Amélie introduced the world to Audrey Tautou whose look and performance turned the title character into an icon. Backed by a gorgeous score and an incredible use of colour, the film manages to be whimsical and dreamlike without sacrificing any of its wit and playfulness. Nominated for five Academy Awards, the film remains one of the biggest French films of all time – and for good reason. A feast for the eyes, ears and soul, it’s definitely worth revisiting on the big screen.
